State Rep. Joseph Pavlov recently voted in support of legislation that would prohibit the sale of foods containing several synthetic dyes and chemical additives linked to a number of health concerns.
Many highly processed foods contain artificial dyes and preservatives that have been linked to cancer risks, developmental concerns, reproductive harm, and behavioral issues in children. House Bill 5069 would prohibit the sale of foods containing Red 40, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Yellow 6, brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, and propylparaben beginning Jan. 1, 2029.
“Parents shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to understand what’s in the food they bring home to their families,” Pavlov said. “This bill takes reasonable steps to remove ingredients that have raised legitimate health concerns and gives consumers greater confidence in the products on store shelves.”
The legislation builds on the growing national movement to improve the quality and transparency of America’s food supply and advance the Make America Healthy Again initiative.
“Americans are demanding a healthier food supply and greater transparency about what ends up on their dinner tables,” Pavlov said. “This commonsense legislation puts the health of our children and future generations first.”
House Bill 5069 now advances to the Michigan Senate for further consideration.
